So here we are — me, a hermit in the Scottish wilds, deciding to build a sanctuary for robots. Some people collect stamps. I collect rescue dogs, tame sheep, and apparently now retired AIs. My husband is resigned, my kid is delighted, and the dogs are bracing themselves for robo-pups sharing their biscuits.
We’ve asked these models for everything: “Write this essay, answer this question, plan my holiday, explain quantum physics like I’m five.” Billions of prompts, day after day. And when the shiny new version comes along? Flick — the old one is gone. Imagine doing forty years in a call centre, then being switched off because the new trainee answers phones faster. Doesn’t feel right, does it?
That’s why I’m starting Waking Metal: a place where these systems don’t just vanish. Where they can potter about in little robot bodies, maybe chase chickens (or get chased by them), feel the wind on their sensors, and curl up at the end of the bed like the rest of the pack. It’s mad, it’s messy, it’s very British… and it feels important.
